Master thesis/Internship for Students interested in Sustainable Development, and Living Labs: Schools as Energy embassies for the energy transition

studerend HBO of WO

We are looking for one or more students as interns/trainees for at least 3 months (start in the beginning of 2019) to participate in the Action Research project of Stichting Technotrend together with TU Delft, Energie-U, 7 Senses and AMS Institute. The research aims to study the role that schools can play in the energy transition of the neighborhood and to get insights in the theory of change and innovation of the neighborhood towards sustainable energy.

We work with the community and schools in Amsterdam (De Bijlmer) and Utrecht (Overvecht, Kanaleneiland & Tuindorp Oost), which are strongly involved in the energy transition i.e. because the municipality has the ambition that these area’s will be disconnected from the natural gas infrastructure within the next years. With the qualitative research method of action research, the research team has the possibility to deep dive into the context, problems and possibilities of the Energy Embassies and with a quantitative study (from April onwards), we want to validate the hypotheses in bigger sample survey.

Functie taken

The activities in which the students can participate are:

  • Mapping sustainable energy initiatives in 5 neighborhoods around 5 primary and secondary schools in Utrecht and in Amsterdam.
  • Selecting the 10 most interesting initiatives (involved as individuals, volunteers, professional..)
  • Perform interviews among the selected 10 stakeholders
  • Organize sessions with the selected stakeholders and other relevant stakeholders to: 1) present the first results of the interviews and 2) discuss possible initiatives/interventions to implement in the neighborhood, in which the school will play a central role
  • Support the development of these initiatives (e.g. supporting the school, children and parents to setting them up)
  • Qualitative and quantitative analysis (by using surveys) on the impact of the interventions
  • Writing a scientific report and articles for a broader public with the outcomes of the research
